A Fresh Start at the 2022 TOC Annual Institute

Management Concepts was proud to sponsor the Training Officers Consortium (TOC) Annual Institute, which took place May 1–4, 2022, in Wilmington, Delaware — and online. The theme “Reset Your Compass: Chart Your New Future” embodied the optimistic spirit of the event, where attendees were glad to meet in person again after the 2021 virtual Annual Institute.

New Connections

We greeted many old friends at our booth in the exhibit hall and made new contacts along the way. Sponsors, attendees, and exhibitors all participated in networking and team-building events, which lent energy to the event and encouraged fellowship among the attendees. During the welcome reception, the participants were randomly divided into four teams for a dynamic game called “Win as Much as You Can.” Teams enthusiastically competed, shaking pom-poms with their team colors and cheering as the game progressed, and the twist ending was a thought-provoking surprise to everyone!

New Approaches

The various plenary and breakout sessions throughout the institute addressed of-the-moment issues and trends in adult education, professional development, workforce development, and workplace culture. Among these innovative sessions, Robert Daugherty, product management director for acquisition and contracting at Management Concepts, presented “POWER LAUNCH: Experiential Training as Career Gateway for New Professionals.” In this session, Mr. Daugherty outlined how an exclusive focus on technical skills in new hires can result in young professionals lacking the business acumen or judgment to effectively use their technical knowledge. He then illustrated how an objectives-based training program can be an effective onboarding process for new or new-to-career employees, why experiential learning provides superior outcomes, and how cohort-based programs encourage communications and skills practice in a safe environment. He also emphasized the importance of technology, compelling content, and ongoing assessments in ensuring continued growth.

One example of this type of experiential learning is the Management Concepts Career Gateway: Acquisition training program that uses the “Mission to Mars” theme to immerse acquisition professionals in robust, experiential, cohort-based training—with an emphasis on compliance and outcomes.
