ASMC NCR PDI: Courage for Real Change

Management Concepts is proud to continue to support the American Society of Military Comptrollers (ASMC) as a Gold Corporate Partner and the ASMC metropolitan area chapters as a Sapphire sponsor of the National Capital Region (NCR) Professional Development Institute (PDI), which took place on March 10, 2022.

For the second year in a row, NCR PDI was held online, and although it was not the face-to-face environment many had hoped for, it was still a chance to engage with the defense financial management (FM) community through informative sessions and in the virtual exhibit hall.

The 2022 conference theme, “Courage for Real Change,” focused on the challenges that Department of Defense (DoD) FM leaders have faced to transform legacy systems, achieve audit, improve operations, reduce costs, and enhance professional advancement. At the same time, the theme could also be reflected in the courage with which the DoD FM community has faced the changing times that have led to a virtual PDI once again.

The opening keynote speaker, the Honorable Michael McCord, USD(C) Comptroller, took advantage of the opportunity to share the newly released DoD FM strategy for FY22–26, made public only the day before. We can’t say whether ASMC had inside knowledge about the timing of the release of the FM strategy. The theme of the conference aligned perfectly with the strategy’s mission and vision statements, challenging the FM community to ensure fiscal responsibility while keeping pace with accelerated missions across all services. The five strategic goals and objectives emphasize the importance of training for a well-prepared FM workforce, maximizing budget to achieve high-value outcomes, and maintaining system integrity, thus trending toward a clean audit and utilizing data for timely decision-making.  The remaining sessions supported the five strategic goals within this new FM strategy.

Another major highlight of the day was hearing Mr. Sammy Payne give his rendition of “Old Glory” in a truly breathtaking show of patriotism, reminding the FM community why it is so important to continue to have the courage to safeguard fiscal responsibility and stewardship of government funds.

Management Concepts staff greeted visitors to our virtual booth and provided information on our new courses aligned to the DoD FM Certification and free minicourses for ASMC Washington chapter members.

Management Concepts is looking forward to hopefully reconvening with ASMC members in person at ASMC NCR PDI 2023 and in upcoming events throughout 2022.
